The Call of History

Laid out during the early 1830s, Haven Street predates the landfill that made the South End’s grid and overall park system possible during the 1840s and 1850s. Originally, it was called “Avon Street” as many of the first South End streets were named after towns in Massachusetts. As such, Haven Street developed very differently from the rest of the neighborhood. It is an example of a much more spontaneous and organic street system that dates back to the very beginnings of Boston in the 1630s. It embraces a 19th-century streetscape defined by an intimate sense of human scale and appropriately vernacular design reminiscent of Beacon Hill’s famous Acorn Street.

Five Haven Street is this picturesque enclave’s oldest and most unique building. It stands out as the only wood frame structure among a group of red brick row houses and is, in fact, the South End’s oldest building after the Porter Houses at 1724-1728 Washington Street. According to public records, merchant Elijah S. Curtis paid the City of Boston $540 for the empty lot in August, 1830. However, there are several possibilities for the actual house’s origin. One possibility is that the house was built on its present site c. 1830-1832. Another is that the structure was moved to its current location in 1830 either from the empty field that Blackstone Square used to be, or from somewhere further along Washington Street. In its past life, it could have been a tavern or a single family home. The dissonance between the high Roxbury shale foundation and the wooden support beams on the garden level supports this theory.

Your Future

Today, Five Haven Street is the only remaining intact wooden single family home in the South End. Its owners have lovingly restored and maintained this unique piece of history, and the result is a seamless blend of original elements and modern amenities. For the first time in over 30 years, this one-of-a-kind gem could be yours.

The pristine exterior comes with a charming copper and acid etched plaque, as well as restored and re-glazed original windows on the front of the house with new double glazed wood windows on the side and rear. The double entry doors leads to the living level, which offers an open layout including a living room with one of four working wood burning fireplaces, an antique mantel, recessed lighting, custom cabinetry with a pull out bar, in-wall stereo speakers, and wood oak floors. The lovely formal dining room with another fireplace is adjacent to a gleaming custom kitchen with top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances, maple and cherry custom cabinetry, and cork flooring. The custom tile work and backsplash, courtesy of Somerville ceramic artist Ruchika Madan, reflects the garden motif seen through the kitchen and bay windows.

Upstairs are four bedrooms, including a master with a fireplace and an en suite bath featuring radiant floor heating, as well as a newly renovated tiled shower with full body jets and a rain shower head. Built-in closets throughout the house with additional storage on the third floor. The lower garden level has been converted to a wonderful au pair/in-law unit with original exposed beams and a brand new bath. There is a separate storage area with a slat wall for a bike, a work bench, shelving, and two enclosed cabinets for storage. All the wooden bannisters have been repaired, and period spindles original to the house have been added.

The home comes with a number of energy-saving upgrades, a lovely deck on the second floor overlooking the community garden, a custom brick paved patio in the backyard with cobblestone edging, and a perennial garden with a large purple plum tree which gives shade and privacy in the growing season. This home is surrounded by permanent open space community gardens owned by The Trustee of Reservations and neighbors can rent a plot to grow flowers and vegetables. Full sunlight embraces this city house from early morning to dusk.
